Seattle, Washington (March 21, 2005) – Seattle artisan cheesemaker, Beecher’s Handmade Cheese was awarded 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals in their first year of competition at the World Cheese Awards in London on March 10, 2005. A Silver Medal was awarded to Beecher’s Blank Slate Tapenade (naturally cultured, soft, fresh farmer’s cheese blended with olive tapenade). Bronze Medals were awarded to Beecher’s Flagship(a one year aged semi-hard cheese with a robust, nutty flavor) and Beecher’s Marco Polo (velvety cheese blended with lightly milled green and black peppercorns).

“We’re pleased with the great showing by American artisan cheeses at this year’s World Cheese Awards and the recognition that these awards bring to Beecher’s and our colleagues across the U.S.,” said Beecher’s founder Kurt Beecher Dammeier.  “This recognition will certainly help us in our quest to encourage people to enjoy great American cheeses everyday.”

Bob Farrand, UK Cheese guild Chairman commented,“We’ve been overwhelmed by the number and quality of entries this year. The judging was extremely difficult as the quality and standard of all the cheeses was impressive throughout.”

The World Cheese Awards, organized by the UK Cheese Guild and now in its 18 th year, is the premier international cheese event with more cheeses from more countries worldwide than any other competition. A record 1,662 cheeses representing 221 companies from all over the world competed in 90 tightly defined categories. A total of 407 awards were presented overall. U.S. cheeses received 34 of the awards.
