If you're interested in sampling over 200
artisan cheeses in a single day, then you don't want to miss the 3rd Annual Seattle Cheese Festival May 18 - 20. Hosted by Seattle's historic Pike Place Market, the Festival promises wine tasting, educational seminars, cooking demonstrations and... oh yes... cheese.
For the past three years, distributors and cheesemakers from around the world have come together at the Pike Place Market, offering free tastings of some of the best artisan cheeses available. On Saturday, May 19th, this year's Festival kicks off with the "Rolling of the Truckles", where man is pitted against cheese as they race down the Market's cobblestone streets, using only their sense of humor and trusty cheese paddle to roll the wheels of cheese to the finish line. Race
contestants will be rolling Beecher's own Flagship Reserve, an 18-pound, cow's milk cheese that is hooped, hand-turned and aged using the traditional cloth-bound method.
After the race, spectators will be treated to a free tasting of Flagship Reserve, served up by Beecher's cheesemakers.
For those looking to dig deeper into the world of artisan cheese, the Festival also features a number of cooking classes and seminars led by local and national cheese experts and top chefs, including:
- Friday at the Movies (with a Nun)
When Sister Noella Marcellino began her 20,000 mile journey through some of the most remote cheesemaking regions of France, she had no idea she would soon become a leading authority in the world of artisan cheese - and a bit of a celebrity. Attendees to this event will be treated to a viewing of Sister Noelle's documentary, The Cheese Nun, followed by a post-movie discussion with the Cheese Nun herself.
- The Bounty of the Pacific Northwest
The Pacific Northwest is quickly becoming a mecca for delicious foods and the artisan cheese and wine industries are no exception. Join American cheese authority Laura Werlin and Beecher's own Kurt Beecher Dammeier as they lead you through the world of cheeses and wines of the Pacific Northwest. Along the way, learn the essential tips on cheese and wine pairing - why some work and why some don't - so you can continue the adventure at home.
- Cooking demonstration with Osteria la Spiga
Famous for its delicious fresh pasta dishes and love of parmigiano-reggiano, Osteria la Spiga is the go-to spot for foodies craving authentic Italian fare. In this cooking demonstration, executive chef Sabrina Tinsley reveals the secret to incorporating Italian cheeses into some favorite recipes.
If you can't make it down to the Festival, there is still plenty of opportunity to experience featured Festival cheeses. Restaurants throughout the Seattle area - including Beecher's sister company, Bennett's Pure Food Bistro - will be participating in the Cheese Festival by
highlighting a "Cheese Fest Best" plate on their menus.
